There are several different kinds of cables and so it is difficult to know what the cat 5 maximum length is for the type of cable you have. The different types of cables are 10base2, 100tx, 10baseT, and 1000baseTx. Each of the categories have specific maximum lengths for each of the sub categories such as thin-net, twisted set, and fiber.
The 10base2 and the 10baseT cables both share the same cat 5 cable length maximums. The Thin-Net can be extended up to 600 feet, while the twisted set cable can only be extended up to 330 feet. The fiber cable on the 10Base2 and the 10BaseT cables can be extended up to 3000 feet. Using the 10base2 and the 10baseT cables you can have 30 stations per thin-net cable, 2 for the twisted sets and fiber. However you can only have a maximum of 1024 stations per network.
The 100Tx have slightly different cat 5 cable length maximums. The twisted set remained the same at 330 , but the fiber cable can only be extended up to 650 feet. Another difference noted in the 100TX cable is that you can only have a 2 stations per cable up to the maximum of 1024. The maximum length possible for a 100Tx network is 650 feet.
The 1000baseTx is the final category of cat 5 cables. The cat 5 cable length maximums for the 1000baseTx cables are quite interesting. The twisted set has a maximum of 82 feet, and the fiber cable has a maximum of 1640 feet.
