Despite popular belief it is possible to send VGA over cat 5 cables. You don’t need anything special , just your ordinary cat 5 Ethernet cable. Even though all VGA connectors have either 13 or 15 pins, you only need eight wires to transmit a VGA signal. You can also use the twisted sets of Ethernet cables to increase the specifications of the VGA signal.
If you are planning on using to send VGA over cat 5 cables there are several things you should keep in mind. Although the cat 5 cables will save you a lot of money over the VGA cables you’ll have to sacrifice things as well. As long as you are transmitting the VGA a short distance, usually under 40 feet, you should not notice any problems. Anything over the forty foot length and you’ll begin to see slight shifts in
color displays as well as other problems. To offset theses you can run the VGA either on a lower resolution or increase the contrast and brightness level.
There are several advantages to running VGA over cat 5 cables. Cat 5 cabling is a lot less expensive than VGA cable.
